Destiny of my Heart!

Chapter Thirteen
________________________________________________
Just as Catherine was about to enter the office building, Sam
came running back up to her and suggested, “Hey, I got to
thinkin’, if you gave me a note for Vincent, well that would give
me a reason to be in the tunnels.”
Catherine looked heavenward, thinking yes, what was she
thinking? She actually did need to let Vincent know she would be
at Pai’s tonight. And so she agreeably said, “Great idea! I should
have thought of that myself.”
Quickly she wrote Vincent a note, and then handing it to the
helper, she said, “Thank you Sam.”

Vincent had just finished stoking the stoves in the Hospital
Chamber, when he heard a clamoring in the tunnels. He smiled to
himself as he realized it was the arrival of the children, being
guided by Jamie, Laura and Brook. "Hmm..." he thought, "...they
are right on time."
As the children approached Vincent, they all anxiously spoke at
once, one child asking if they had to get shots, another asked if
they would have to take some yucky medicine, another asked if
Peter had that little hammer with him again, or that thing he sticks
in their ears? Then finally Joseph asked, "Just what is going to
happen to us?"
Calmly Vincent answered, "This is nothing new Joseph. Peter
will examine you, with the help of Father, checking to make sure
you are all healthy and strong. I assure you there is no need for
concern."
Just then Mary stepped into the outer room and said, "Doctor
Peter is ready for you. Who is going in first?"
The children all looked around waiting for someone else to step
up to be first. When no one readily did, Vincent coaxed a bit by
saying, "If the examinations speed along, perhaps we will have
time to go on an adventure afterwards."
To which Kipper expounded, "An adventure? Where to?"
Samantha inquisitively asked, "Maybe to the Crystal Caverns?"
To which Zach irritatingly said, "Are you kiddin'? Boy oh boy,
that's way too far!"
Thinking twice that maybe the Crystal Caverns were a
possibility, Zach hopefully asked, "Isn't it Vincent?"
Vincent answered, "Yes, too far for a mid day excursion.
However...perhaps next time."
He then quieted the children's inquiries by saying, "I do have an
idea, but it shall remain a secret. Now do as Mary says, and when
everyone is through, we shall depart."
They all said they would cooperate, and couldn't wait to go!

As the end of the work day neared…Catherine had just prayed
her plan worked out, when her phone rang.
Thank God it was Peter, calling to confirm, “Mission
accomplished!”
Giggling with delight, Catherine verified, “You got the globe?”
To which Peter informatively said, “Yes, and delivered it to the
repair shop as you requested."
In a tone of extreme gratification, Catherine said, "This is too
perfect."
She then wanted to express she felt a bit guilty adding another
task to Peter's already hectic day, by saying, "I know my note put
you on the spot...but you were my only hope."
"Are you kiddin'? I love espionage! And the repair shop was on
the way to my office. So no problemo at all kiddo."
Peter than added, "Oh, and it will be ready for you to pick up,
tomorrow afternoon.”
This was the best news Catherine could have gotten, and so she
expounded, "On Christmas Eve! Just in time."
Curiously, she then asked, “Were you able to pull it off with out
Vincent knowing?”
Hesitantly, Peter began, “Well it was a bit tricky tracking the
globe down. I figured it would be back in Vincent’s chamber…So
I go rooting around in there, and when I couldn’t find it, I realized
it must still be over in Jacob’s! So as I am about to enter Jacob’s
chamber…I run into Vincent, who was also going in.”
Wondering how Peter could have gotten the globe with Vincent
there, Catherine on pins and needles asked, “Yes…go on.”
“Well…” continued Peter, “We no sooner walk in, when Jacob
said to Vincent, “Here’s your globe. You left it here last evening.”
Peter continued, “Well luckily before he had a chance to pick it
up, a message from Jamie came over the pipes, saying the children
were ready for the hike.”
Peter went on to explain, “You see, Vincent had promised to
take the kids on an adventure as a special treat, if they expediently
tolerated their physicals today.”
Proudly Peter added, “Which they had! What a great bunch of
kids! So anyway about the globe…”
Peter cleared his throat and continued, “Well since Vincent left
the globe behind, sitting there in plain sight, I had to let Jacob in
on your surprise so I could take it. Oh, and Cathy, he thought it
was a great idea, and in that thick Shakespearean droll he has…he
said, “Splendid! Splendid indeed!”
Peter laughed as he finished imitating his dear friend, which
caused Catherine to giggle too, because Jacob’s accent was one of
the reasons he endeared himself to her so.
Just then, Paul peaked around the wall and asked, “Hey Cathy,
do you have that one file on Beckman? Oh sorry, I didn’t know
you were on the phone.”
Catherine stood up and handed the file to Paul, and signaled she
would be right with him. "Well I better go, thanks again Peter,
Merry Christmas!"
"Merry Christmas kiddo."

As Mary returned to her chamber, after a long grueling day in the
medical chamber, she was humming The First Noel, as she lit her
Christmas candles, and poured herself some sassafras tea.
Readily she slipped off her shoes, and put on her slippers before
she sat down and nestled the last of the afghans she needed to
finish in her lap.
Sighing aloud she said to herself, “Ahhh…the last one! After
this…I must wrap!”
Just then Jacob, who was standing at her door, said, “Oh Mary, I
don’t wish to interrupt…”
Looking up to welcome him, Mary repeated, “Interrupt? Not at
all, come in Father.”
Jacob gingerly stepped in and looked around as he did so, and
said, “Oh, I thought I heard you talking to someone.”
Embarrassed by the fact Jacob seems to be around the few times
she had expressed her thoughts aloud, she quickly explained, “Oh
Father…I hope you don’t think I am going crazy or anything, I
guess I am starting the bad habit of thinking aloud. It just seems to
help me mentally organize my tasks.”
Looking downward, Mary humbly said, “I am sure I must be
blushing from embarrassment.”
With a flirtatious akimbo grin, Jacob said, “You are…”
Clearing his throat, he then added, “…but you should not be self
conscious with me Mary; after all, we are dear old friends, are we
not?”
Warmed by Jacob’s personal tone, she lowered her knitting
needles into her lap, smiled back at him, and agreeably said, “Dear
old friends… yes…that we are. A standing which makes me most
proud.”
She then motioned to the tea pot on her table, and said, “Please
serve yourself some tea, and sit with me while I finish the last of
the children’s aphgans.”
Thoughtfully Jacob poured his tea, and said, “So did you say this
is the last one you need to make? I thought you had finished.”
As Mary nodded to the others folded and stacked neatly on the
chest, she said, “I had miscounted! Oh I was fearful I may not
make it, but I am happy to say I will. Each of the children shall
now receive one.”
Looking at the brightly colored array of aphgans, Jacob declared,
“Lands sakes Mary! I marvel at your talent. The children will be
beside themselves when they receive your gift.”
Softly Mary said as she knitted, “I like imagining the aphgans
keeping them toasty warm as they sleep on these winter nights. It
gets so damp and chilly here in the tunnels.”
Nodding, Jacob said, "Tis a nice thought, and true as well.
Coverlets are a neccessity here below. Especially for the children."
After hearing Jacob's assessment of the usefullness of an aphgan,
Mary kept her smile to herself, knowing she would be gifting him
with one as well.
Mary then vehemently added, "If it were not for Rosa's
generosity, well it wouldn't have been possible."
Jacob agreed, saying, "Yes indeed. Oh by the way, a helper
delivered your note of thanks to her as you requested."
Warmly Mary said, "Good, I meant to send one earlier on to that
dear lady, but time has gotten away from me with all the
festivities of late."
Jacob sipped his tea, and said, "Well better late than never as
they say, Hmm sasafrass...very good."
In reply Mary said, "Dr. Wong recommended it. I like it too."
She then inquisitively mentioned, "I heard Vincent talking to the
children before their checkups. Saying if there was time, he would
take them on an adventure. I wonder where he decided to take
them.”
To which Jacob informatively said, “They have gone to see
Narcissa.”
“Oh my!” Spouted Mary, “That is quite a hike!”
With a soft laughter, Jacob said, “Well, they are not going all the
way to Narcissa’s chamber, but rather, Vincent knew she would
be in the north crag shelf this afternoon, where she is cultivating
her mushrooms. So he is taking the children there to say Merry
Christmas to her. Oh they were so pleased when they learned of
their destination."
To which Mary noted, "I am sure they would be. They worry
when they don’t see or hear anything from her for a span of time.”
Jacob looked downward as he shared, “I dare say, Vincent does
as well. He said he felt it was time to visit and check on her .”
With a sense of wonder, Jacob added, “They certainly have a
special bond of sorts.”
Matter-of-factly, Mary replied. “Always have.”
In agreement, Jacob said, “Yes…always have.”
Thoughtfully, Mary noted, “I should think Narcissa will be very
pleased for the visit...”
She then added, “You know Father; I was just thinking, Vincent
could have gone there himself! But he chose to take the children. I
believe he is a very good influence on them, teaching them the
importance to visit the elderly.”
“True, true.” Said Jacob, “However, I don't think of Narcissa as
elderly...she is in good health.”
Defiantly Mary said, “I know, but she is getting older! One never
knows how long she will be with us. And she is so all alone.”
Firmly, Jacob replied, “Alone yes, but know this, she is content
with her solitary life. And in regard to how long she has left on her
lifeline, well none of us know, now do we?”
Looking back resignedly, Mary softly said, “No…which is why
we must treasure every moment we have on this earth.”
In reply, Jacob thoughtfully said, “Yes…yes indeed.”
As Mary knitted her last stitch, she stood up and declared,
“There! All done!”
“Splendid!” Applauded Jacob, and he then offered, “Allow me to
help you fold it.”
After the folding was done, Mary stacked the last aphgan with
the others, and said, “Tomorrow is Christmas Eve, and everything
is coming together so nicely.”
A sadness came over Jacob’s face, and Mary could not ignore
seeing the change. And so she asked, “Father what is it?”
At first Jacob was going to attempt to hide his pain, but after all,
was he not with his dear friend? Shouldn’t he open up once in a
while and share himself even in the distressing moments as well as
the joyful?
And so he confided, “I am giving up hope Devin will come home
this Christmas. I should think he would have arrived by now if he
were.”
Mary put her comforting hand on his and said, “Yes I think he
would have Father..." She then optimistacally added, "...there is
always next year.”
Weakly smiling, Jacob said, “Yes perhaps next year.”

Sitting back in his office chair, Peter impatiently looked at his
watch one last time before he stood to put his coat on. Regretfully
he pondered the possibility his contact had failed him. He then
leaned down to buzz his secretary Ruth, again, and asked, “Are
you certain there wasn’t a call, or a message for me?”
In reply, she said, “No Doctor…no message, but there is
someone here to see you. Shall I send him in?”
Quickly scanning his calendar, Peter said, “I thought I saw my
last patient.”
Efficiently Ruth replied, “Well he isn’t a patient; he said he is an
old friend.”
Peter perked up at the notion his contact came through after all!
And so he said, “Yes…yes send him in.”
She then turned to Peter’s visitor and said, “The Dr. said you
may go right in Mr., Mr., I am sorry I didn’t catch your name.”
Meekly he replied, “Wells, Devin Wells.”
“Go right in.”
Devin stood at the door for a moment before he turned the door
knob to enter Peter’s office.
Standing motionless at the threshold, he waited to see what kind
of greeting he would get from Peter, his father’s oldest and dearest
friend. The man who was aware of all the dirt, and friction in the
family. And was a man who had scolded him a time or two
through the years. But Peter did request this meeting, and so
hopefully it will be cordial. He just hoped this wasn’t any bad
news in regard to his father or his brother.
And so softly he said, “Hello Peter…you wished to see me?”
Turning toward the young man, Peter feeling so pleased that
Devin came, he smiled, and said, “Yes, please come in, it has been
a while since I’ve seen you Devin.”
Eager to hear if all was well, Devin asked, “Is the old man all
right?”
Realizing his message may have alarmed him, Peter said, “Yes,
Jacob is fine…”
Anxiously, Devin asked, “Vincent?!”
Quickly, Peter answered, “Yes Vincent is fine too, everyone is
fine…I just needed to find you, and ask if you would go home for
Christmas…for your father and brother’s sake.”
